  STEUBEN GLASS PERFUME FUNNEL WHIMSYDESCRIPTION: Steuben glass perfume funnel whimsy. Iridized lead glass with applied handle. Reference: See Fig. 8.18 p. 184 of Frederick Carder and his Steuben Glass by Thomas P. Dimitroff. Shows a gold Aurene funnel c. 1917 without handle and notes that it probably was made by gaffer August Jansson. Note the handle on this piece is consistent with the style of handles seen in the line drawings for punch cups, p. 316 of Paul V. Gardner. Author notes: Glassworkers throughout history are known to have created their own pieces at the factory, but on their own time. Most glass houses freely allowed workers the opportunity to exercise their creativity in this way. These works, often referred to as >whimsies,= include paperweights, stocking darners, letter openers, button hooks, pipes, pens, funnels, and many other types of objects. Carder=s workers were no exception. Often, whimsies were variations of stock designs and are, thus, identifiable as to origin. Indeed, the workers were very adept at producing such items in many types and colors of glass. Today, various whimsies have become highly prized pieces.
